Who Encourages the Encourager?
Being an encourager is an amazing gift! I'd like to think that it is one of my gifts and I think that I'm good at it. However, as much of a blessing as it is, is as difficulty as it can be. The encourager needs encouragement too. Some may think that the encourager is always good, doesn't have problems or doesn't suffer. That is so far from the truth. We suffer, we cry, we have pain, we get weak, we get lonely... So, who does the one that is often giving encouraging words, a listening ear or sound advice go to?
For those of us who encourage, may I step out on a limb and say that we are also those with depressive spirits, want to be alone when we are down, feel like there's no one or nothing that can lift our spirits when we are hurting...
If I'm correct, this is all the more reason for you/us to make sure that we have our own outlets and get some encouragement from something, someone or somewhere else. Your gift of encouragement is rewarding, fulfilling, amazing and absolutely incredible. God trusted you with this AWESOME gift. But, if you don't seek your own encouragement, you will burn out.
Here are some things that I do when I need encouragement.
1. Pray. God has to refill me. He is the source of my strength. Trust me, even this gets difficult.
2. Encourage myself; remind myself that I can do this, I can push through, I got this...(constant repeating)
3. Seek the prayers of my family and friends. You can't have enough prayer. Lean on their faith.
4. Write. Writing is therapy for me.
5. Take a drive. Focus on music or the beautiful sun, clouds and trees.
6. Call a family member or friend if I can. Sometimes, I have to force myself.
7. Just be and let the moment pass. Feel it and move on. (Not easy)
8. Eat junk food. In moderation of course. (nothing like a sugar fix to put a smile on your face)
9. Look up encouraging quotes.
10. Encourage someone else.
Be encouraged my fellow encouragers. Surround yourself with other encouragers. Exercise your gift and be glad for it but don't deplete yourself. You must refuel.
