What is Self-Care?

ree

I believe I've written about self-care before. However, I've recently gained a new perspective. It's not that I didn't know but, a light bulb went off and I want to make sure that you all are aware as well.

I was listening to a live conference and the keynote speaker was asked about self-care. She expressed that she hated the term. In part of her explanation she mentioned that the many talks about self-care often include spending money; spas, manicures, pedicures, massages, taking a mini vacation, etc. But what about the people who can't afford those things? Does that mean that they can't participate in self-care? It absolutely does not. I shared this with a therapist friend of mine who further described self-care as being multifaceted. That's it!!!

I don't hate the term. I like it and I'm still a strong advocate for it but please know that I want everyone to participate and know that there are so many things that you can do.

One of my friends said, that she can't say that she has taken enough time on herself? Well, what does that really look like? It honestly looks different for each person. How much time is enough time? Who defines that? You, and only you.

When you say, no, to someone, you are saying yes, to yourself. Look at the image. Setting boundaries is a way to take care of yourself. Asking for help is a way of taking care of yourself; recognizing that you need it and can't do it all. Worshipping on Sunday is a form of self-care. It is time that you have set aside every Sunday. You are taking care of your spirit.

This weekend, I said, yes to myself. I participated in things that I wanted to. It didn't necessarily mean that I was inactive but I said, yes to me and not to outside factors.

Learning to say, yes to yourself takes discipline and practice. Try it out with just one thing.

Sure all of the other things, like getting manicures and massages are forms of self-care. Give yourself a manicure (soak your nails, push your cuticles back and put oil around them). ...no money required. Soak yourself in a hot bath and listen to music; a free app. ...no money required. Just sit quietly for ten minutes and block out the outside noise. ...no money required. Cook your favorite meal and take your time; enjoy the art of cooking and being in the kitchen. ...minimal money required.

I took a walk in the snow. That was just for me. I didn't invite anyone or ask anyone. Guess what? ...no money required.

Don't be afraid to say, yes to yourself. It's not selfish, it's needed. It's needed for your health. Decide to say, that you are worth it. Step back a bit, breathe and rest. You deserve it.
